Taxis are an effective way to get around. If you are staying only a couple of days, it may be more cost effective to cab it than to get a rent-a-car. Cab fares range from $10 (South Strip, e.g. MGM/NYNY to $15-20 (North Strip eg Caesars/Venetian). When you get off the airplane, there is a cab line and the friendly dispatcher will tell you to stand on a number painted on the sidewalk. (Do not tip him.) The Airport Shuttle is no bargain, you will wait forever.

If the cab driver tries to take you through a tunnel (extra $5 on the meter for no good reason), or tells you about the bad accident on the normal route to your hotel (there never really seems to be one), take down his license number and call in a complaint to the Nevada State Taxi Commission. Tip 10%. Cab dispatchers at hotels, tip 50c-$1 (depending of course on how you are doing at the tables!) The walking distance to your hotel room may vary considerably depending on whether you are taking a cab to the main entrance or using the self parking garage, you will learn from experience.

Beware the Taxi drivers who try to rip off visitors to Vegas, we know this from first hand experience. The problem is mainly at the airport, the driver takes new arrivals the "long way around". We encountered this problem when we arrived, they took us via the tunnel to our hotel and it cost $18.

A few days later I had to return to the airport and picked up a cab/taxi, the driver asked me if I was new in town, when I said No, he took me via a much quicker route (Via Tropicana) and the fare was $8...so beware or use the shuttle buses which cost $3.
